Second falcon egg hatches at PPL headquarters
10:53 AM EDT, May 13, 2008
A family of endangered peregrine falcons nesting atop PPL Corp.'s downtown Allentown headquarters made Lehigh County history this morning when the first two of four eggs hatched.
The birth of the falcon chicks marked the first confirmed peregrine nesting success in Lehigh County, and PPL officials say it appears at least one of the two remaining eggs appears to be in the process of hatching, which means as many as three chicks could be in the nest by day's end.
The hatching in Allentown marks yet another milestone in the falcon's impressive recovery across Pennsylvania, which had no peregrines as recently as the early 1960s.
Thanks to a ban on the pesticide DDT and reintroduction efforts by the Pennsylvania Game Commission, falcons numbers have been steadily climbing in recent years, and it appears the species is well on the road the recovery.
All told, nine falcon chicks have already hatched on PPL properties this spring, with more likely on the way.
